Provenance

One of eleven mourning rings kept together in a single case since the eighteenth century.

The oval bezel enclosing a panel of plaited hair beneath rock crystal, within a border of seed pearls, the reverse engraved with initials and a date. English, 1789.

An unremarkable object by weight and materials that sold for more than three times its high estimate. Mourning jewellery of this period has developed a serious collecting following, and intact hairwork with a legible inscription is uncommon.

Condition: hairwork intact and unfaded. Two pearls replaced. Inscription clear.
