Provenance

Purchased in London in 1878 and carried back to Savannah in a trunk that came with the lot.

The articulated body applied with royal blue enamel scales, the head set with cabochon ruby eyes and a diamond crest, the tail concealing the clasp. English, circa 1870.

Serpent jewellery ran through the whole Victorian period and the market for it has never been stronger. Enamel of this quality rarely survives without loss, which explains the result.

Condition: enamel with two minor losses to the underside, stable. Clasp functions correctly. Diamonds bright.
