Acquired by the Marchmont family before 1880 and unmoved from the entrance hall since.
Barrel form, each pierced with cash medallions and painted in famille rose enamels with peony and rockwork. Late Qing dynasty.
The top lot of the Marchmont sale. Bidding opened at four thousand dollars and closed after eleven minutes against competition from three continents, finishing at nearly three times the high estimate.
Condition: one seat with a stable hairline to the interior rim, not visible when displayed. Both retain original glaze with no restoration.
