Provenance

Hung in the Marchmont dining room. The sitter's identity was lost within the family before 1920.

Oil on canvas, half length, the sitter in a pale silk gown against a dark ground. Unsigned. American school, late eighteenth century.

An unattributed portrait of good quality and honest condition. The handling of the lace at the cuffs suggests a trained hand working outside the major centres. We have made no attribution and none is offered.

Condition: relined, with scattered retouching visible under ultraviolet light, principally to the background. Frame later, gilt over gesso.
