Our first dedicated Asian art sale draws on three private Southern collections formed between the 1890s and the 1970s, when Charleston merchant families traded actively with the China ports.
Chinese export porcelain leads the offering, including a garniture of famille rose vases with unbroken family provenance and a rare armorial dinner service commissioned for a Carolina planter in 1785. Japanese works are represented by Meiji period cloisonné and a small group of woodblock prints in exceptional colour.
Marcus Vale has consulted specialists in London and Hong Kong on attribution for the principal lots. Condition reports include ultraviolet examination for all porcelain above five thousand dollars.
What to know before you bid
Viewing and preview
Every lot may be inspected in person before the sale. Preview runs the three days prior, from 10am to 5pm, and by appointment outside those hours. Condition reports are available on request for any lot.
How bidding works
Bidding takes place through our online auction platform. Register there ahead of the sale, browse the full catalogue, and place bids live or leave an absentee bid in advance. A buyer's premium applies to the final hammer price. Full terms are listed on the platform.
